How to Avoid a Holiday Party DUI

Across the nation, drunk driving fatalities show a marked increase in December. According to the Department of Transportation, the U.S. experiences about 300 alcohol-related fatalities during the week from Christmas to New Year’s Day alone.

If you plan to celebrate the holiday season with egg nog, wine, spirits, or beer, follow these tips for how to avoid a DUI charge in Arizona.

1. Host a party Holiday party

When the revelry takes place at your home, you do not have to worry about driving anywhere after having a few drinks. Make sure to have lots of extra blankets and pillows for guests who need to stay the night. Remember to serve nonalcoholic beverages for the designated drivers in your group. Consider collecting keys at the door so drivers will not hit the road until they are safely able to drive.

2. Eat while you drink

Taking it slow can reduce your blood alcohol content and potentially preserve your ability to drive safely. Alternate alcoholic beverages with water and eat a small meal before you go to the party. Make sure you grab a snack from the buffet each time you head to the bar. Remember that you cannot accurately estimate your own BAC, so you should either stop drinking at least three hours before you plan to get home or arrange a sober ride.

3. Designate a driver

With the proliferation of ride-sharing apps like Lyft and Uber, those who drink can easily find a safe way home for a nominal fee. If those services are unreliable in your area, consider calling a cab or make a bargain with a friend to take turns driving to this season’s social engagements.

Even if it seems like a drag to stay sober at a party, nothing will ruin your evening faster than a DUI. In addition, drinking and driving risks your life and the lives of others on the road, so abstaining is the safest strategy if you plan to drive.
